Real Men, Real Heroes created the Teen Hero program in 2009, responding to a demand for younger role models they encountered during visits to Wichita public schools. Teen Heroes are selected from Wichita's public high schools during the spring of their junior year to serve during their senior year in high school. Teens are chosen based on their personal and academic achievements, but also for their ability to convey a message of inspiration to younger children and teens.

In exchange for a year of service, which includes speaking at schools and mentoring middle school students in the Saving Our Sons program, the Teen Heroes each receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, their photos are featured on baseball-style Teen Hero cards, billboards and posters. The teens also go on at least one field trip a year. This year's teens went to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City.
