Teen Heroes
Criteria and Application
Deadline for Applying: April 1, 2010

Application for membership in the Teen Hero program is open to Wichita youth (USD259)
who submit this application before the deadline, reside in the City of Wichita, and are high school
students. Applicants must be high school juniors entering into their senior for the 2010-
2011 school year.

Mission
We primarily serve as mentors, tutors, and motivational speakers to youth in the greater Wichita community, with a particular focus to serving at risk youth.

Purpose
To provide Wichita youth an opportunity to encourage other youth and be a role model to their
peers and others in the community.

Requirements
A high school student will be selected from each of the 11 schools in the USD 259 school district.
Selections will be made based on the following:

  • Interest in participating in the Teen Hero program
  • Academic and Community Achievement
  • Leadership potential
  • Feedback from references
  • Commitment to participate a minimum of 2 hours per month
  • Maintain GPA Requirement, 2.5
  • Completion of service year  - June 1st  through May 31st
  • Ability and willingness to speak in front of large groups


Benefits
Teen Heroes will be a great benefit to the many students of Wichita. This program will provide an
opportunity for students to:

  • Receive a $500 scholarship1
  • Participate on the Teen Hero Radio Show – Power 93.9
  • Obtain community service hours
  • Annual Out of town trip
  • Receive a positive mentorship from a professional in the community

1Student must participate for the full service year and enroll in a college or trade school to receive $500 scholarship.

2Transportation needs for female teen heroes will not be provided by members of Real Men Real Heroes. Real Men Real Heroes has partnered with female organizations to assist in this capacity.


Teen Hero Activities


Elementary/Middle School - Site Visits School visits will require Teen Heroes to go out to different elementary and middle schools to speak with youth about making good choices, the importance of education, and the role of a good student. Teen Heroes will partner with an adult Hero at each of the visits.


Tutoring/Mentoring - Teen Heroes will serve as tutors and mentors to elementary and middle school youth at the Atwater Center.


Public Speaking - Teen Heroes will partner with a Hero to go out and give motivational speeches at many venues in the Wichita community (i.e. local churches, businesses).


Community Service - Real Men, Real Heroes will identify community service projects throughout the year to participate in. This program allows the organization to give back to the community and make a difference in the life of youth and adults (i.e. Community Unity Day, Black Expo, Juneteenth Parade).


Teen Hero Talk – Power 93.9 Morning Show - Teen Heroes will participate on a radio talk show discussing issues that impact the youth of today.


Teen Hero Meetings - Teen Heroes will be required to attend a 1-hour Teen Hero meeting. Teen Heroes will be required to attend training sessions during the summer to prepare them for speaking engagements during the school year.
